EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
