Fierce Winds Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to avoid going out as severe gales strike the nation.

Intense gusts hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 households without power and compelled agencies to cancel more than 100 aircraft departures, according to local media.

The winds are impacting the whole South Island and southern parts of the North Island, as stated by the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have released rare high-level wind alerts - the most severe warning - in central regions including Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been encouraged to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for additional electricity and network failures.

Widespread Destruction and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss is primarily influencing homes mainly in the southern region, although officials state that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have reported that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, and trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a individual was fatally injured after being struck by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel to and from the city have been cancelled due to the winds, while various routes and public facilities are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have declared a state of emergency, to support emergency management operations.

Strike Action During Severe Weather

The wild winds on this day occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been called a "mega strike", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the intense climate has compelled them to alter some of their plans, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or called off.

Similar gusts are affecting the nearby nation, causing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Authorities have issued flame prohibitions for fear of forest fires.
